On August 14, 2023, Pakistan's Independence Day, Azadee was introduced. The name Azadee, which translates to "freedom" in Urdu, embodies the platform's mission to enable Pakistani professionals to operate flexibly and autonomously. Rozee.com, Pakistan's online jobs portal, introduced Azadee as a platform for freelance work for Pakistani professionals. Azadee seeks to offer a local and safe network for connecting with companies and freelancers to work on different projects. Azadee makes use of the 100,000 employers and 10 million qualified professionals and independent contractors already using the Rozee platform.

A platform that embodies the true essence of freedom for freelancers and businesses

Through the Azadee platform, professionals can find projects for which they are qualified, and employers can post short-term tasks such as software development, accounting, social media management, data entry, content writing, marketing and sales. S. H. Kazi, CEO, Rozee said, "We are delighted to announce the launch of Rozee's Azadee, a platform that embodies the true essence of freedom, on Pakistan's Independence Day. This platform is transforming Pakistan's independent landscape, offering almost endless opportunities for freelancers as well as businesses." Instead of traditional full-time employment, which comes with significant costs, this platform allows employers to supplement their workforce and continue to grow on a tight budget.

“Many businesses in Pakistan are committed to finding ways to uplift the country through their efforts. We believe Azadee can be a shot in the arm to boost a slowing economy constrained by cash flows” added Monis Rahman, Co-Founder and Chairman. “We believe significant economic activity can be generated by re-introducing our talented professionals and employers to each other through freelancing relationships. Many of these newly minted freelancers will become entrepreneurs and attract international projects and much needed foreign exchange.”

Azadee supports freelancers to work independently, such as selecting their clients, projects, rates, and schedules. Freelancers can also have a better work-life balance, as they can work from any location and at any time. Azadee helps freelancers to improve their skills and expertise as they can work on diverse types of projects, learn from feedback and access online courses and resources. Freelancers can also pursue their niche and increase their income over time.

How Pakistan became a freelancing powerhouse in Asia and the world

Freelancing is undoubtedly the fastest-growing industry in Pakistan and globally. It is not only flourishing in America but also in Pakistan. This is evident from the fact that there are more than 1 million freelancers in Pakistan who are working from home. Moreover, according to the report of Online Gig Economy Q2 2019, Pakistan has secured the 4th position in the global rankings of freelancing, surpassing other Asian countries such as Bangladesh, the Philippines, and Russia, and following the United States, United Kingdom, and Brazil. Upwork, another data source, states that Pakistan ranks third in the list of registered members on Upwork, while Freelancers (a freelance website) has the highest number of registered freelancers from Pakistan.

Freedom and flexibility are two main advantages that encourage people to pursue freelancing in Pakistan. Another possible reason for the growth of freelancing in Pakistan and Asian countries is low wages. This is my opinion based on the available data.

Role of Pakistani Government

The Pakistani government has taken several steps to support the freelancing industry in the country, which is one of the fastest-growing sectors in the digital economy. Some of the main initiatives are:

1.      The National Freelancing Facilitation Policy 2021, which aims to boom the worldwide marketplace percentage of Pakistani freelancers and provide them with an encouraging surroundings for working online. The policy proposes diverse incentives and benefits for freelancers, together with tax exemptions, domestic mortgage schemes, medical insurance, pension plans, and get entry to co-working spaces and incubation centers.

2.      The DigiSkills program, which is a massive online training program that offers nine free courses on different skills that are in high demand in the online market. The program has trained over 2 million freelancers so far and aims to train 10 million by 2025.

3.      The e-Rozgaar program, which is a joint initiative of the Punjab Information Technology Board (PITB) and the Youth Affairs Department. The program provides training and mentorship to young graduates who want to start their freelancing careers. The program has trained over 40,000 freelancers and generated over $5 million in revenue.

4.      The Pakistan Software Export Board (PSEB), which is a government agency that facilitates the registration, payment, and dispute resolution processes for freelancers. The PSEB also provides certification, marketing, and networking opportunities for freelancers.

5.      The Pakistan Freelancers Association (PAFLA), which is a non-governmental organization that represents and advocates for the rights and interests of freelancers in Pakistan. The PAFLA also provides guidance, support, and resources for freelancers to enhance their skills and productivity.

Freelancing contributes to the digital economy and social development of countries like Pakistan, where the government provides various support and incentives for freelancers. Freelancing is a growing and promising sector that can create opportunities and challenges for the future of work.
